One Response to “Vance Locke (1913 – 1977)”

This fellow must have been a neighbor of mine.

“Setalcott” is the name of one of the Indian tribes that inhabited the north shore of Long Island. I think the nearby town named “Setauket” (as in the “Raid On Setauket”) is a derivation of that tribal name. The “Raid On Fort St. George” also took place on Long Island during the Revolution (the patriot raiders from Connecticut landed nearby) and the Culper Spy Ring, of which Austin Roe was a member, was active in this area as well.

Google some of this stuff if you want to learn a little about Long Island history! The Culper Spy Ring is especially interesting; the story is very well told in “Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring” by Alexander Rose.
